ENG • Since the occupation of the West Bank began in 1967, Israel has imposed increasingly severe restrictions and constraints on the management of Palestinian water resources. Today, the national water company Mekorot controls much of the wells and water infrastructure, ensuring abundant supplies for Israeli settlements and outposts—illegal under international law—while restricting access for Palestinian communities, thereby turning water into a weapon of war. Palestinians are prohibited from drilling deep wells, where the water is less saline and more suitable for agriculture and consumption. They are therefore forced to purchase water from Mekorot itself, at prices far higher than those charged to settlers. Deprivation is compounded by threats, assaults, and acts of vandalism—often targeting water reservoirs in particular—carried out by settlers and the Israeli army, which have intensified since 7 October 2023. Pietro Masturzo has visited Palestine several times to document the effects of the occupation, the progressive abandonment of the land, and the various forms of resistance among the population. The images in this reportage were produced mainly in the Jordan Valley, during different journeys between 2011 and 2026.
